Piazza del Popolo: Rome’s Encounter with Beauty and History

Piazza del Popolo, located in the heart of Rome, is one of the city’s most majestic and impressive squares. This square, with its spectacular architecture, central fountain, and three radial streets running through it, is an iconic place that enchants visitors from all over the world.

The Origin of the Name

The name “Piazza del Popolo” literally means “People’s Square” and is related to the ancient custom of using this square as a place for public assembly and popular celebrations. Today, the square continues to be a meeting place for Romans and tourists.

The Flaminian Obelisk

At the center of Piazza del Popolo stands the Flaminian Obelisk, an ancient Egyptian obelisk more than 24 meters tall. This obelisk dates back to Ancient Egypt and was brought to Rome in ancient times. It is surrounded by four lion statues that add further majesty to the square.

The Twin Churches

On opposite sides of the square are twin churches, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto. These Baroque churches, with their symmetrical facades, add exceptional beauty to the square and provide an opportunity for a spiritual visit during your stay.

The Three Radial Roads

From People’s Square, you can clearly see three radial streets radiating inward into the city. These streets are the Via del Corso, the Via del Babuino and the Via di Ripetta. Each of these streets is famous for its shopping, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

The Panoramic Terraces

Piazza del Popolo also offers some of the best panoramic views of the city of Rome. You can go up to the panoramic terrace of the Pincio Hill, a public park located above the square, to enjoy a spectacular view of the Eternal City, with St. Peter’s Dome in the foreground.
